RC Karrinyup Welcomes New Member Mike

At our recent weekly meeting, the Rotary Club of Karrinyup was delighted to induct new member Mike. Mike has now been visiting us for some weeks and coming along to our Stirling Farmers Market as well. He expressed a keen desire to join the club and, following due process, has now been welcomed into the Rotary family. He will serve on the Community Service Committee.

Welcome to RC Karrinyup, RYE Inbound Ona

On Monday evening, members of Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455), together with representatives of her host familes, gathered at Perth International Airport to welcome our 2017 - 2018 Rotary Youth Exchange Inbound from Spain, Ona. Off to a flying start, Ona enrolled at Warwick Senior High School and will meet club members at her first meeting on Wednesday.

Hannah's Year in Australia

Youth Servcie Director Wayne introduced our 2016 - 2017 Rotary Youth Exchange student Hannah from Germany, who has now spent a year as part of our club. Wayne outlined the objectives of the Rotary Youth Exchange program as a context for Hannah's presentation, referencing how she has fulfilled each of these objectives.

Induction of President Phil

President Trish called President Elect Phil to the podium, inducted him as the forty-fourth President of RC Karrinyup and handed over the chain of office. President Phil thanked the club for the honour entrusted to him, reiterated the call of the new RI President - Australian Ian Riseley, for Rotary to be 'Making a Difference' and introduced the Board of Directors for 2017-2018.

2016 - 2017 President's Report

Outgoing President Trish delivered her report for the 2016-2017 Rotary year, summarizing the work and achievements of RC Karrinyup over the past twelve months and mentioning just a few of the highlights.  She said she felt sure that our club has realised Rotary International's 2016 - 2017 goal of serving humanity.

2016 - 2017 Graham Fosbery President’s Award

At the recent RC Karrinyup Changeover Dinner, the prestigious Graham Fosbery President’s Award for 2016-2017 was presented to Carolyn Prunster for her dedicated service, particularly in the area of electonic media. The award is given each year by the President to a person considered to have made an outstanding contribution to the club. Graham Fosbery's good friend Peter Durrant presented the award.

2016 - 2017 Paul Harris Fellow Club Honours

Congratulations to Rotary Club of Karrinyup Paul Harris Fellow recipients for 2017: Vic Dennis and Sam Horsnell. President Trish read the citation for each and called on DG Patricia Canning to present Vic with a Sapphire Pin and Sam with a Paul Harris Fellow at the recent Changeover Dinner as is the tradition in the club.

Award to Science Educator

At the recent Rotary Club of Karrinyup Changeover Dinner, Graham Johnson, Head of Science at Warwick SHS, was named a Paul Harris Fellow  in recognition of his efforts to promote science education. Graham and his science team run an annual science fair, conduct outreach initiatives with local primary students and provide Warwick students with a number of extension opportunities. The Club, which has a long established partnership with the school, recogises his service to our community.

Update from Ndola - June 2017

Significant progress has been made following Phase 1 of the RC Karrinyup major International Service project in Ndola, Zambia. After the installation of a water bore and storage tank, which provides fresh water to the site of the new orphanage being developed by ALMS, we moved into the site design phase of the project. The club recently sent a Pre-Vocational Training Team (VTT) to Ndola to scope the site plan. Team member Kate has reported back to the club about the visit.

2017 Michael Chin Humanitarian Award

A highlight of the RC Karrinyup birthday celebration is the presentation of the Michael Chin Humanitarian Award. This is one of the club's highest honours and is given to recognise outstanding individuals, who serve the community. President Elect Phil, helped by Michael's widow Sylvia and son Anthony, made the preseentation this year to Riding for the Disabled Association WA (Carine) stalwart Mark Lloyd.
