RC Karrinyup Pandemic Plan Update

Unfortunately our venue is no longer allowed to host our face to face meetings because of new restrictions advised by Government. As per the Club’s Coronavirus Pandemic Response Plan, commencing this coming Wednesday 25th March, all future meetings are held online only until further notice. It will be possible to log in via zoom at the usual meeting time. Our new 'venue' is now advertised on our website and, as always, visitors are still welcome to join us.

RC Karrinyup Coronavirus Pandemic Plan

With the escalation in the activity around the Coronavirus (COVID19) Pandemic that is affecting the globe, on our doorstep and recent government decisions, which will affect our Rotary Club. The Club acknowledges the importance of the welfare of our members. The Western Australia (WA) Government has announced a State of Emergency along with a formal public health emergency over the Coronavirus Pandemic and confirming that there was still no evidence of community transmission in WA. Water & Sanitation March 2020

March is designated as Water and Sanitation Month and one of the more daunting aims of Rotary is to address this problem worldwide with their goal of 'Sanitation for all by 2030'. Two areas of focus are our club’s involvement in the Zambia project led by Peter Durrant and the worldwide coronavirus outbreak. Phil addressed simple ways of distinguishing between the coronavirus and a common cold, steps to take to stay safe and what to do if you think you may have been exposed to the virus.

A Year in Norway

RC Karrinyup Youth Director Trish Lynch is passionate about the Rotary Youth Exchange program so was most enthusiastic to introduce our 2019 Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange student Alicia, newly returned from her year in Norway, to tell us about her adventure of a lifetime. Last month we farewelled our 2020 Outbound student Julia to Belgium. Applications for Outbound Rotary Youth Exchange in 2021 are now open and close on 31st March 2020. Could this be you! Camp Quality Update 2020

Ross Daniel introduced Nadine Magill, State Manager of Camp Quality, to tell us how our support for kids affected by cancer in WA is working. Camp Quality gives kids facing cancer the chance to be kids again, providing a support network and a range of non-medical support services for children living with cancer and their families. RC Karrinyup has been a strong supporter of the program over many, many years. Nadine explained what is happening in 2020 and thanked the club for that ongoing support.

2020 National Youth Science Forum Report

As part of our Youth Service, RC Karrinyup again sponsored students to attend the 2020 National Youth Science Forum. However, for this year's succesful applicants the experience was certainly not what they were expecting. This week, Alana Dooley and Nic Cleaver told us of their unprecedented adventures in Canberra and, while disappointed at missing some key events, were full of praise for the way the organisers handled the emergency.

Bicycles for Humantiy

International Director Ken Foggo introduced our guest speaker David Tucker, a member of the Rotary Club of Crawley and a driving force behind “Bicycles for Humanity WA” (B4HWA). The organisation collects old bicycles, repairs and refurbishes them and then transports them to communities in need. Since its establishment in 2011, B4HWA has transported 5700 bikes to various countries in Africa and 1000 bikes to communities in remote WA.

The Magic Bus

RC Karrinyup's major 40th anniversary project - the Earbus, was designed to work in the Kimberley region of WA. The purpose built vehicle was completed and handed over to the Earbus Foundation in April of 2017 and worked at first in other regions. The State Government committed $2.7 million over three years to enable the Earbus program to operate in the East Kimberley, the area for which it was intended, from May 2018. Earbus CEO Paul Higginbotham recently brought us up to date with the work of the Earbus since then.

GLOW Guides

It was our privilege to sponsor Bettie, one of the Aranmore Catholic College Glow Guides, to attend a Girl Guide Camp last year. Girl Guides aims to assist girls to empower girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting members of the community, developing confidence and life skills. GLOW Guides, Leederville is part of the organisation's Diversity Project.- and it fits very nicely into our Club's aim to support projects that promote and enhance our Nation's Diversity.

Bon Voyage Julia

RC Karrinyup 2020 Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound student to Belgium Julia took off this week with RC Karrinyup President-Richard Prunster among the family members and well-wishers at Perth International Airport to see her off. Julia is very excited to be spending the year living and studying in Belgium. District 9455 Rotary Youth Exchange committee members also attended and took photos at the airport. Applications are now open for Rotary Youth Exchange 2021.
