Mens Shed Set to Go

The first meeting of the Karrinyup Community Mens Shed held recently at the approved site, the former Balcatta pre Primary School at 6 Jedda Road Balcatta, was a great success with over forty men attending. The steering committee now has a lease from the City of Stirling for commencement on 1st June. Support for Passages 2018

Passages Resource Centre is a referral service for homeless or street present young people between the ages of 12 and 25. The Rotary Club of Karrinyup was proud to support the Rotary Club of Perth’s recent Passages Race Day as a Silver Sponsor. All funds raised, over $68,000, through ticket sales and auctions are directed towards assisting street present young people through information, programs and referrals.

Earbus Official Kimberley Launch

RC Karrinyup's major 40th anniversay project, the Earbus, was designed to work in the Kimberley region of our state. The purpose built vehicle was completed and handed over to the Earbus Foundation in April of 2017 and has been hard at work in the Goldfields and other areas ever since. The State Government has now committed funds to expand the Earrbus program to the Kimberley with the official launch set to take place on 18th May in Kununurra. Our Earbus has finally 'come home' to work in the land for which it was intended.

Preparing for Kokoda

Under a benefactors trust, in conjunction with the North Beach RSL Sub-branch, RC Karrinyup will sponsor two young Australians to participate in an organised commemorative tour of the Kokoda trek in June. The applicants were required to demonstrate a genuine interest in Australia’s military history. At our meeting this week, David Singer and Drew Sweet introduced themselves and told us why they will embrace this gruelling undertaking and why it holds a special significance for each of them.

2018 Nurse of the Year

The RC Karrinyup Nurse of the Year Award was created in 1990 to honour outstanding nurses and midwives working at the Osborne Park Hospital (OPH). This annual Award recognises a nurse (or midwife) whose daily dedication and care epitomises the highest standard of quality and personal commitment. The winner of the 2018 RC Karrinyup Osborne Park Hospital Nurse of the Year Award is Jennifer Pitcher. This Award is highly regarded by the staff and promoted extensively by the Hospital.  Congratulations Jennifer!

2017 Michael Chin Humanitarian Award

RC Karrinyup is pleased to announce the 2017 recipient of the Dr Michael Chin Humanitarian Award is nature lover and educator of over sixty years Eric McCrum OAM. The Award, created in 2000 in honour of charter member Michael Chin, honours outstanding individuals, who serve the community for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. Eric was honoured to receive the Award, presented by Sylvia and Peter Chin, at the recent RC Karrinyup birthday dinner.

RC Karrinyup Honours Trigg Lifesaver

At the 44th birthday dinner this week, RC Karrinyup honoured Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club long standing member, Justin Meldrum, recognising his thirty-six years of voluntary service to the community by naming him as a Paul Harris Fellow. This means that RC Karrinyup has donated $US1000 to The Rotary Foundation in Justin's name. Rotary District 9455 Governor Lindsay Dry presented Justin with a certificate and lapel pin.

Support for Camp Quality 2018

Camp Quality aims to provide a better life for every child living with cancer in Australia and has been operating since 1983. RC Karrinyup is a strong supporter of the program. On Sunday 29th April a group of RC Karrinyup members  attended the final day of the Camp Quality “Middle Camp” (for children aged  10 to 13) at Woodman Point to provide, not just a financial contribution, but also 'hands on support'. The Rotarians agreed they gained more from the experience than they gave.

Anzac Day 2018

Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455) was well represented at the North Beach Anzac Day Dawn Service, with President Phil and members of our Community Services Committee and partners attending.  Other club members attended services at King's Park and elsewhere. In true Anzac spirit, PP Trish attended the Dawn Service in Wanganui, NZ. As has happened in previous years, President Phil, together with Community Services member Ross, laid a wreath on behalf of the club. Lest We Forget.

Update from Ndola- March 2018

RC Karrinyup's major International Project involves supporting a school for at risk children in Ndola, Zambia. Phase 1 of the project, completed in 2016, provided a reliable supply of fresh water. On a recent private visit to Zambia, our member Nchima scheduled a visit to the school. The visit was aimed at continuing to build on our relationship with Arising Life Ministries, to check on current state of affairs and review RC Karrinyup funded projects. He spent a whole day with Joyce Chimbila the Director of ALMS, her staff and the lovely children at ALMS.
