Vocational Visit to InfraBuild

On 22 November, nine Club members, including our exchange student Karolina, visited the InfraBuild facility in Forrestfield. They learned how coils of steel wire and reinforcement rods are converted into the intricate configurations and shapes necessary for the construction of the reinforced concrete buildings and bridges we see around us every day. InfraBuild is part of the GFG Liberty alliance which, among other entities, owns and operates the Whyalla steel electric arc furnace (EAF) works in South Australia. The group found the visit most interesting and educational.

2023 City of Stirling Art Awards Presentation

The Karrinyup Rotary Community Service team again sponsored the City of Stirling Biennial Art Awards with a prize for the local artist. This year the judges selected two winners of the Local Art Award. President Kay Durrant and Community Service Director Mike Murphy attended the official opening on Friday 3 November, where Mike presented the awards. He is seen here with one winner - Marina van Leeuwen. The exhibition is free and open to the public until Sunday 12 November (10am – 5pm daily) so there is still time to visit.

Support for 2023 AEN WA Awards for Excellence

Members of the Karrinyup Rotary Vocational Service team recently attended the 2023 Apprentice Employment Network of WA Awards for Excellence gala presentation evening, where Tess Gardner and Carolyn Prunster presented Karrinyup Rotary Club Special Recognition Awards. This is the club's second year supporting this project, which is the result of Kay Durrant’s understanding and recognising the importance of the need to support young people starting out in their careers.

Congratulations Caleb - 2024 WA Rhodes Scholar

In 2018, our club sponsored Caleb from Warwick SHS to participate in the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) program. From there he continued to excel, becoming Dux at WSHS and during his university studies was selected to spend a month in Israel, working alongside PhD students at the Weizmann Institute. Caleb updated the club at the end of his first university year. He has now been named 2024 WA Rhodes Scholar. Well done Caleb - we are very happy to have been just a tiny part of your journey!

Lake Gwellup Story Trail Walkshop

The City of Stirling in partnership with Karrinyup Rotary will construct its first Story Trail to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary. This will be the Club's Golden Project. To gain a deeper understanding of how the community engages with Lake Gwelup in developing the Story Trail, to support the project and bring the local community together, a barbeque and Walkshop event was held recently at Lake Gwelup Regional Open Space. The community is invited get involved and help shape the next chapter in the Lake Gwelup story.

Vocational Support for Alta 1 Kimberley

Karrinyup Rotary's Vocational Service team funded two overlockers for use by students at Alta-1 Kimberley College. They have arrived safely and a letter of thanks has been received for them and the donations of fabric and thread from Rotary friends. The girls and the staff were very appreciative of the materials and the overlockers. Teacher Anita, who has a background in Home Economics, has set up a sewing station in the class. This has proved a wonderful tool for engaging the students.

Our major project, the weekly Stirling Farmers Market, provides an invaluable service and has established our club as a visual presence in the local community. It is also serves as a fundraiser, which enables us to support our many Community, Environment, International, Vocational and Youth Service Projects as well as respond to Disaster Relief causes.
