RAWCS WA Bushfire Relief

WA is experiencing severe bushfire damage.  Steep terrain and dangerous winds are hampering the heroic efforts of fire crews and already over 80 families have lost their homes. The result of this will be long-term hardship for many and Rotary seeks your help in collecting funds so that the necessary support can be provided. You can help Rotary support the community and recovery effort through RAWCS - Rotary Australia World Community Service, with a secure tax deductible donation.

Earth Committee Community Collaboration

RC Karrinyup’s new Earth Committee is charged with caring for the environment in ways, which will bring about positive change in the world. Members recently attended a social event seeking to collaborate with Friends of Trigg Bushland. We look forward to hearing a presentation at a club meeting very soon, as we work with them to achieve our common goals.

Support for RYLA 2021

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program offers young men and women between the ages of 18 and 25 years an opportunity to attend a residential seminar designed to develop their leadership skills. RC Karrinyup sponsored three worthy participants to the 2021 RYLA program held recently - Phoebe Earnshaw, Abdiwahab Hillow and Audrey Repsevicius. The young people will present an account of their experience to members at a club meeting early in March.

Support for Foodbank WA 2020

Since the inception of Foodbank WA over twenty-five years ago, RC Karrinyup has been a strong supporter. This week, Foodbank's Community Engagement representative Aggie Przybylo visited our club to bring us up to date with what has been happening since COVID-19 struck earlier this year. Foodbank WA redistributes oversupplied and donated food to those in need but this year the need has been huge. Former Community Service Director Peter advised that the club had recently made our substantial annual donation, just in time for Christmas.

Defibrillator for Street Chaplains

Street Chaplains are non-denominational volunteers, who are ‘Good Samaritans,’ providing crisis care unconditionally to any in need on the streets of our city. They offer compassion and practical help to all, who need and want it, especially the most vulnerable. They had a necessity for a portable defibrillator, which would enable them to administer CPR, when they were required to deal with such emergencies and approached local MP Tony Krsticevic MLA requesting assistance. Tony contacted RC Karrinyup, who, as 'People of Action', made it happen and recently made the presentation.

Mens Shed Gives Back to the Community

The Karrinyup Community Men's Shed was a major project of RC Karrinyup Community Service. Now established as a self sufficient organisation, the Shed has found a way to 'give back' to the Community. Playgroup WA recently hosted a family picnic in the park for vulnerable families. The event celebrated recovery from perinatal anxiety and depression, a mental health condition that affects one in five mothers and one in ten fathers or 7000 new WA families every year. Thanks to Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed, they were able to host a gardening workshop for all the families, potting herb seedlings into the pine planter boxes.

End Polio Now at Stirling Farmers Market

To mark World Polio Day, our International Service team of Ken and Sandra conducted an End Polio Now Community awareness stall at the Stirling Farmers Market. With the last reported case in Australia being in 1972, they found little interest in the community, because the disease has all but been eliminated due to the vaccine. Rotary is dedicated to the eradication of this potentially fatal infectious disease for which there is no cure but which can be prevented through immunization. The world is so close to achieving the goal of a polio free world. RC Karrinyup made a significant contribution to the polio eradication this week.

Karrinyup Community Mens Shed Update October 2020

Jeff Crookes from the Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed (KCMS), seen here with Ross and Peter, gave us an update on the Shed. This RC Karrinyup's major Community Service project was planned some seven years ago. It has now become a reality and has been flourishing for two years. The RC Karrinyup has provided considerable funding for the establishment of the Shed, which is now self-sufficient on an operational basis and no longer in need of support from RC Karrinyup. This project has been achieved because of Rotary and is an excellent example of Rotary making a difference to people’s lives.
