First Birthday for Karrinyup Community Mens Shed

The RC Karrinyup's major Community Service project, the Karrinyup Community Men's Shed, has now been flourishing at 6 Jedda Road, Balcatta for a year. On Friday, 21st June, members celebrated the first birthday with an ‘Open Day’ at the Shed, during which they proudly displayed their handiwork, welcoming interested visitors and potential new members.

Support for Foodbank WA 2019

Since the very inception of our club, RC Karrinyup has provided strong support for Foodbank WA, now in its 25th year. This week, Foodbank WA Community Fundraising & Events Officer Janie Brackenridge attended our meeting. She was greeted by Community Service Committee members Peter Polain and Mike Murphy. Janie updated us on recent work at Foodbank WA which is currently conducting its Winter Appeal.

Support for Interplast 2019

Rotary District 9455 Interplast Coordinator Steve Dixon, seen here with our Charter Member Ian, attended our meeting this week to receive our Club's annual donation to Interplast. Started in Australia in 1983 as a joint project between Rotary and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Interplast exists to repair bodies with simple surgery and rebuild lives. The Rotary Club of Karrinyup has provided ongoing support for many years and continues to do so.

Support for Wheelchairs for Kids 2019

Wheelchairs for Kids is a project of the Rotary Club of Scarborough, which produces up to 350 wheelchairs a month for disabled children all over the world. These are produced to WHO standards at the workshop in Wangara. At our meeting this week, International Committee member Ken presented Wheelchairs for Kids CEO Gordon with Rotary Club of Karrinyup's annual donation. Gordon gave us a short update on the recent milestones of the project. Members particularly enjoyed a short video demonstrating how the wheelchairs are produced in the workshop.

2019 Nurse of the Year

The RC Karrinyup Nurse of the Year Award was created in 1990 to honour outstanding nurses and midwives working at the Osborne Park Hospital (OPH). This annual Award recognises a nurse (or midwife) whose daily dedication and care epitomises the highest standard of quality and personal commitment. The winner of the 2019 RC Karrinyup Osborne Park Hospital Nurse of the Year Award is Karen McNulty. This Award is highly regarded by the staff and promoted extensively by the Hospital. Congratulations Karen!

RC Karrinyup Celebrates 45 Wonderful Years.

Happy Birthday to us! The Rotary Club of Karrinyup was chartered in 1974 and this week celebrated forty five years of service at a special birthday dinner at the Hillarys Yacht Club. Many former members and Friends of Rotary were able to join us for this historic occasion. During the evening there was some reminiscing on all the wonderful ways our club has served the local, international and youth communities through a variety of projects over the years.

2018 Michael Chin Humanitarian Award

RC Karrinyup is pleased to announce the 2018 recipient of the Dr Michael Chin Humanitarian Award is Elizabeth (Beppie) de Kuyer, a dedicated volunteer at 'Wheelchairs for Kids', the signature project of RC Scarborough. The Award, created in 2000 in honour of charter member Michael Chin, honours outstanding individuals, who serve the community for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. Beppie was honoured to receive the Award, presented by President Robyn and Michael's son Anthony Chin, at the recent RC Karrinyup birthday dinner.

Support for Camp Quality 2019

Camp Quality aims to provide a better life for every child living with cancer in Australia and has been operating since 1983. RC Karrinyup is a strong supporter of the program. On Sunday 14th April a group of RC Karrinyup members attended the final day of the Camp Quality “Middle Camp” (for children aged 10 to 13) at Woodman Point to provide, not just a financial contribution, but also 'hands on support'. The Rotarians agreed they gained more from the experience than they gave.

2019 National Youth Science Forum Report

President Robyn Cleaver introduced Sandy Chen (Churchlands Senior High School) and Keegan Sherwood (Warwick Senior High School), who told about their experiences in Canberra in January at the 2019 National Youth Science Forum. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a not-for-profit organisation that runs a number of residential programs to encourage young people in their passion for science. It is held in January each year and covers the subjects of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Support for African Outreach 2019

International Committee Assistant Director Ken introduced Colleen Smith, whose African Outreach project in Zimbabwe has long been a recipient of the club's international service support. Meg Godwin, widow of Past President Ken Godwin, introduced our club to African Outreach many years ago and it was lovely to have Meg along to share the evening. Colleen gave us an update on what has been happening with the project since her last visit. Ken presented Colleen with this year's donation to the project, which targets aid for orphans, refugees and the elderly.
