How Stroke Aware Are You?

Would you recognise the signs of stroke? The week from 2nd - 8th August 2021 has been designated as National Stroke Week. With so much focus on COVID-19, there is a tendancy to overlook one of Australia's biggest killers. Fortunately, in Western Australia we are still free to hold a Stroke Week Event to raise awareness. As part of our service to the local Community, the RC Karrinyup will host an information stall and provide free blood pressure checks by health professionals at the community stall at the Stirling Farmers Market on Sunday 8th August. When did you last have a blood pressure check? Spending a couple of minutes to chat to the team and take a BP check could save your life or that of someone your love. See you there!

SOS in the CoS

Several weeks ago, Mick, Sandra, Jane and Tess from the RC Karrinyup community service team set out on a mission to provide some relief from the cold for homeless people in the City of Stirling in the form of additional winter clothing. The aim was to collect a quantity beanies, socks, gloves and small blankets to be distributed by the City of Stirling in backpacks. Being 'People of Action', the team gathered items from work and friends and operated a stall to collect donated items from the local community at the Stirling Farmers Market. Many, many thanks to all, who contributed in so many different ways. Homeless people in our community will stay a little warmer for your efforts.

Tallulah Wins with Help of RC Karrinyup

RC Karrinyup supports our link school Warwick SHS. Head of Science Graham Johnson reports ‘In the WAHPVA (Western Australian Human Powered Vehicle Association) event both Tallulah and Yokayi ran strongly for the duration of the event. It was cold and miserable with heavy rain prior to the event and considering the two trikes ran without front windscreens for the 6 hours, it was a great overall result. Yokayi ran in the top 10 for most of the day eventually finishing 12th overall and 6th in her division and Tallulah finished 19th overall and first in her division as the highest finishing All-female entrant.’

Graham said’ It is not about winning but about the opportunity, which the support of RC Karrinyup enables Warwick students to experience. ‘We at Warwick Pedal Prix racing are proud to carry the name of the Rotary Club of Karrinyup on our trikes’.

Supporting Blinky Bill

The RC Karrinyup this week gave a substantial donation in support of Blinky Bill - Car #96 in the Variety Bash 2021 to be held in August in the Pilbara. Blinky Bill is driven by local youth Ethan, along with his mum Jennifer as navigator. Our club was impressed to see a young person from our area fundraising for such a great cause. Started by Dick Smith in 1985, the Bash raises funds for the Children's Charity, Variety. To date, over $23 million has been raised for sick and disadvantaged kids around Australia. It is not a race or a rally, rather in Dick Smith's words, "a drive in the outback with a few mates" in cars that are 25 years or older, which have been done up in a fun theme. Read more and support Blinky Bill.

Support for Socks in the City

Homeless people struggle to find clean dry socks to wear. As a result they can develop trench foot and other problems. The best treatment is prevention and the best prevention is to wear clean dry socks. Inspired by a presentation at the recent Joint Bi District Conference, RC Karrinyup member Sandra McGuire initiated a drive to support the Socks in the City project of the RC Heirisson to supply warm socks to homeless people in Perth. Sandra and her team collected both socks and money at club meetings and at the Stirling Farmers Market over several weeks. The results were amazing!
