Support for Alzheimer's Research 2019

For a number of years, Australian Alzheimer's Research Foundation has been a major beneficiary of Karrinyup Rotary Club Community Service. Dr Stephanie Rainey-Smith from the foundation recently attended a club meeting to give us an update on recent developments in research. Alzheimer's Disease is currently the second leading cause of death in Australia. There is no cure, however, there are a number of factors, which can result in a statistical lower incidence .

Support for ECU Student Nurses & Midwives Global Classroom

As part of our Vocational Service, RC Karrinyup supported a team of student nurses by funding medical equipment to take for use during their training placement in Tanzania. Tania Beament, Director of the International School of Nursing & Midwifery at Edith Cowan University explained the benefits of the program to enrich the training of 'ECU Student Nurses and Midwives in a Global Classroom'. Rosebeth, who was part of the program, described the cultural immersion and how the supplies which the club funded were put to use.

RC Karrinyup Welcomes Elise

The RC Karrinyup was delighted this week to welcome 2019 - 2020 Inbound Rotary Youth Exchange student Elise from Belgium. It has been a busy week for Elise, who attended a briefing weekend, took an orientation tour of Perth, shopped for her school uniform and attended her first day at Warwick SHS. At our meeting this week, Elise's mentor Kay introduced her to club President Richard, who formally welcomed her to the club and to Perth.

Support for Multiple Sclerosis WA 2019

Our club has supported the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA over many years. This week, Community Service Director Mike welcomed Sue Shapland, General Manager, Strategic Supports and Residential Options and Nicki Washington, General Manager Member and Client Services. Sue thanked the club for our ongoing support and gave us an update on latest developments and support for clients and described how our latest donation was spent.

Visit to Greenbatch

On Friday 14 June, six members of our club, along with other Rotarians, visited the Greenbatch Foundation for an evening tour of their facility in Mount Claremont. Greenbatch explained that they are hoping to build relationships with WA Rotary Clubs to fund the set-up of the educational facility and to assist with the collection of plastic bottles. Both the discussion and tour were most informative and those members who attended have since met and formed a committee to investigate how our Club can become involved in this worthwhile initiative.

Induction of President Richard

At the recent Changeover meeting, President Robyn called on President Elect Richard, inducted him as President of RC Karrinyup and handed over the chain of office. President Richard thanked the club for the honour entrusted to him, mentioned the theme chosen by the new RI President Mark Maloney - Rotary Connects the World and announced his impact areas for the Rotary year as Diversity, Inclusion and the Environment. He then introduced the Board of Directors of the club for 2019-2020.

2018 - 2019 Graham Fosbery President’s Award

At the recent RC Karrinyup Changeover Dinner, the prestigious Graham Fosbery President’s Award for 2018-2019 was presented to Peter Polain for another unstinting and wonderful year of Rotary service to the Karrinyup Rotary Club. The award is given each year by the President to a person considered to have made an outstanding contribution to the club. Peter was awarded for his exceptional service to the Club particularly for the ongoing management of the Stirling Farmers Market and recently the establishment of the Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed.

Award to English Educator

At the recent Rotary Club of Karrinyup Changeover Dinner, Meredith Dawn, Head of English at Warwick SHS, was named a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition for her efforts to improve the English and literacy skills of her students and the difference she makes to their lives and educational outcomes. The Club, which has a long established partnership with Warwick SHS, recogises Meredith's outstanding service to our community.

First Birthday for Karrinyup Community Mens Shed

The RC Karrinyup's major Community Service project, the Karrinyup Community Men's Shed, has now been flourishing at 6 Jedda Road, Balcatta for a year. On Friday, 21st June, members celebrated the first birthday with an ‘Open Day’ at the Shed, during which they proudly displayed their handiwork, welcoming interested visitors and potential new members.

Support for Foodbank WA 2019

Since the very inception of our club, RC Karrinyup has provided strong support for Foodbank WA, now in its 25th year. This week, Foodbank WA Community Fundraising & Events Officer Janie Brackenridge attended our meeting. She was greeted by Community Service Committee members Peter Polain and Mike Murphy. Janie updated us on recent work at Foodbank WA which is currently conducting its Winter Appeal.
