Bon Voyage Julia

RC Karrinyup 2020 Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound student to Belgium Julia took off this week with RC Karrinyup President-Richard Prunster among the family members and well-wishers at Perth International Airport to see her off. Julia is very excited to be spending the year living and studying in Belgium. District 9455 Rotary Youth Exchange committee members also attended and took photos at the airport. Applications are now open for Rotary Youth Exchange 2021.

Foodbank WA Celebrates 25 Years

On 24 October Peter Polain attended the twenty fifth anniversary celebration of Foodbank in WA. RC Karrinyup has had a long association with Foodbank WA having been involved since its inception. 25 years later, Foodbank WA is still focused on a vision of ending hunger in WA. To help celebrate this special milestone, a history book 'The Giving Pantry' has been released in both hard and soft copy, which may be downloaded free of charge in pdf format.

Rotarians Against Malaria

'If you think you are too small to make a difference, spend a night with a mosquito.' This African proverb is an introduction to one aspect of Rotary’s focus this month, which is on disease prevention and treatment. While there are many impressive projects being carried out, Club Trainer Phil focussed on one with an Australian initiative - the war against malaria, RAM or Rotarians Against Malaria. Prevention and early treatment are vital in saving lives and a program in Timor-Leste has it on target to be malaria free by 2020/2021.

Support for The Pinnacle Foundation

Community Service Director Mike is seen here with Choon Tan, a member of the WA committee for The Pinnacle Foundation, a new recipient this year under the RI and RC Karrinyup strategy of Diversity and Inclusion. The Pinnacle Foundation provides educational and vocational support to young adults for whom their gender identity, sexual orientation characteristics have prevented achievement of their career aspirations or personal development. The Foundation offers a spark of hope for these young people.

New Undercover Area at RDA Carine

Rotary Club of Karrinyup members were proud to attend the opening of a fantastic new undercover arena at RDA Carine. Led by our resident builder Ross and one of our many engineers Stuart, the club was integral in providing the leadership, advice, consultancy and technical expertise to convert RDA's need into a proposal that could be submitted for both approval and funding. Enter the City of Stirling, Lotterywest and AE Hoskins Building Services and the dream has now became a reality. Watch a video of the opening ceremony here.

When people are plunged into crisis, Rotary Community Service Project ShelterBox Australia provides the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives. RC Karrinyup has long been a supporter and this week Rotary District 9455 ShelterBox Chair David Brockway, seen here with partner Claire and International Director Ken, attended our meeting to share updates on what is new with ShelterBox and how our recent donation is helping.

2019 City of Stirling Art Awards

The Rotary Club of Karrinyup was again proud to sponsor the Local Artist Award at the City of Stirling Art Award Exhibition 2019. Past President Peter Polain is seen here with winner Julie Sylvester, whose beautiful beach scene was a standout. Julie, a long time resident of Scarborough and now Innaloo, is inspired by the WA coast. 24 October 2019 Focus on World Polio Day

24th October is marked globally as World Polio Day, established by Rotary International. Rotary is dedicated to the eradication of this potentially fatal infectious disease for which there is no cure but which can be prevented through immunization. There are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus. We are so close to achieving the goal of a polio free world. On 24th October, RC Karrinyup will make a significant contribution to the polio eradication.

Sunday Times Foodbank Report 13.10.19

Hunger is on the rise - Foodbank WA has reavealed that there has been a twenty percent rise in the number of hungry West Australians coming to seek food. CEO Greg Hebble says that the charity has been aware of the situation for some time but it is getting worse. RC Karrinyup has supported Foodbank WA for many years.
