Camp Quality Update 2020

Ross Daniel introduced Nadine Magill, State Manager of Camp Quality, to tell us how our support for kids affected by cancer in WA is working. Camp Quality gives kids facing cancer the chance to be kids again, providing a support network and a range of non-medical support services for children living with cancer and their families. RC Karrinyup has been a strong supporter of the program over many, many years. Nadine explained what is happening in 2020 and thanked the club for that ongoing support.

2020 National Youth Science Forum Report

As part of our Youth Service, RC Karrinyup again sponsored students to attend the 2020 National Youth Science Forum. However, for this year's succesful applicants the experience was certainly not what they were expecting. This week, Alana Dooley and Nic Cleaver told us of their unprecedented adventures in Canberra and, while disappointed at missing some key events, were full of praise for the way the organisers handled the emergency.

Bicycles for Humantiy

International Director Ken Foggo introduced our guest speaker David Tucker, a member of the Rotary Club of Crawley and a driving force behind “Bicycles for Humanity WA” (B4HWA). The organisation collects old bicycles, repairs and refurbishes them and then transports them to communities in need. Since its establishment in 2011, B4HWA has transported 5700 bikes to various countries in Africa and 1000 bikes to communities in remote WA.

The Magic Bus

RC Karrinyup's major 40th anniversary project - the Earbus, was designed to work in the Kimberley region of WA. The purpose built vehicle was completed and handed over to the Earbus Foundation in April of 2017 and worked at first in other regions. The State Government committed $2.7 million over three years to enable the Earbus program to operate in the East Kimberley, the area for which it was intended, from May 2018. Earbus CEO Paul Higginbotham recently brought us up to date with the work of the Earbus since then.

GLOW Guides

It was our privilege to sponsor Bettie, one of the Aranmore Catholic College Glow Guides, to attend a Girl Guide Camp last year. Girl Guides aims to assist girls to empower girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting members of the community, developing confidence and life skills. GLOW Guides, Leederville is part of the organisation's Diversity Project.- and it fits very nicely into our Club's aim to support projects that promote and enhance our Nation's Diversity.

Bon Voyage Julia

RC Karrinyup 2020 Rotary Youth Exchange Outbound student to Belgium Julia took off this week with RC Karrinyup President-Richard Prunster among the family members and well-wishers at Perth International Airport to see her off. Julia is very excited to be spending the year living and studying in Belgium. District 9455 Rotary Youth Exchange committee members also attended and took photos at the airport. Applications are now open for Rotary Youth Exchange 2021.

Rotarians Against Malaria

'If you think you are too small to make a difference, spend a night with a mosquito.' This African proverb is an introduction to one aspect of Rotary’s focus this month, which is on disease prevention and treatment. While there are many impressive projects being carried out, Club Trainer Phil focussed on one with an Australian initiative - the war against malaria, RAM or Rotarians Against Malaria. Prevention and early treatment are vital in saving lives and a program in Timor-Leste has it on target to be malaria free by 2020/2021.

Support for The Pinnacle Foundation

Community Service Director Mike is seen here with Choon Tan, a member of the WA committee for The Pinnacle Foundation, a new recipient this year under the RI and RC Karrinyup strategy of Diversity and Inclusion. The Pinnacle Foundation provides educational and vocational support to young adults for whom their gender identity, sexual orientation characteristics have prevented achievement of their career aspirations or personal development. The Foundation offers a spark of hope for these young people.

New Undercover Area at RDA Carine

Rotary Club of Karrinyup members were proud to attend the opening of a fantastic new undercover arena at RDA Carine. Led by our resident builder Ross and one of our many engineers Stuart, the club was integral in providing the leadership, advice, consultancy and technical expertise to convert RDA's need into a proposal that could be submitted for both approval and funding. Enter the City of Stirling, Lotterywest and AE Hoskins Building Services and the dream has now became a reality. Watch a video of the opening ceremony here.

When people are plunged into crisis, Rotary Community Service Project ShelterBox Australia provides the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives. RC Karrinyup has long been a supporter and this week Rotary District 9455 ShelterBox Chair David Brockway, seen here with partner Claire and International Director Ken, attended our meeting to share updates on what is new with ShelterBox and how our recent donation is helping.
