RC Karrinyup Celebrates 51 Years.

Tonight we celebrate our Club’s 51st Birthday. We have seen some amazing accomplishments over these years.

Our first local achievement was the Access Ramp for the Disabled at Mettams Pool in about 1979. Stuart Stone designed and help build it. It has been recently revamped but not sure if our involvement has been noted. Since then, we acknowledge member Ross Daniel, who designed and built the Karrinyup Scout Group Hall, and the Remembrance Gazebo which are both in the Lake Gwelup Reserve area.

Most recently we developed the Lake Gwelup Trail Head and I acknowledge Peter Polain and Peter Durrant for their efforts. The Trail invites visitors to a journey through time and reflects our commitment to community engagement which has been deeply ingrained in our Rotary Club since our inception.

The Trail invites visitors to a journey through time, helped by thoughtfully designed Trailhead Structure consisting of signage that serves as an information point.

The Lake Gwelup Story Trail involves three essential narratives:

  • Aboriginal History: we honour the indigenous heritage of this land and are working with local Aboriginal groups to ensure accurate representation.
  • European Settlement History: we acknowledge the impact of European settlers on the landscape and community development.
  • Ecological Significance: we cherish the diverse flora and fauna that thrives in this area and recognize the importance of conservation.

The Lake Gwelup Story Trail represents a journey of understanding with each other and shared responsibility.

  • Strengthen Community Bonds: encourage connections with the residents and their local environment.
  • Promote reconciliation: by acknowledging and celebrating Aboriginal culture and history.
  • Enhance Educational Opportunities: The Trail will serve as an outdoor classroom for people of all ages.
  • Boost Community Engagement: by involving residents in the project’s development.

We pay tribute to these past endeavours and ask for your recognition for just one of our avenues of service.
