The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program offers young men and women between the ages of 18 and 28 years an opportunity to attend a residential seminar designed to develop their leadership skills, build confidence and grow personally and professionally. It does not just focus on leadership in a professional sense but assist in growing each participant as a person. They learn how to lead with empathy, work effectively as a team and step out of their comfort zone.

This year's RC Karrinyup participant Arabella is 22 year old teacher at Yanchep Secondary College. She shared her impressions of the week-long program, speaking glowingly about a jam-packed week, which she described as the most valuable experience of her life.

Among what she had learned Arabella listed:

  • different types of leadership
  • being empathetic and vulnerable
  • public speaking
  • direct and clear communication
  • comfort zones are blinding
  • emotional intelligence but above all
  • 'I am enough'
