Lake Gwellup Story Trail Walkshop
The City of Stirling in partnership with Karrinyup Rotary will construct its first Story Trail to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary. This will be the Club's Golden Project.
Lake Gwelup is located on Mooro Country, home to Wadjak Nyoongar people for more than 40,000 years. In 2016, Karrinyup Rotary completed a project to provide seating for the Mooro Country walking tours - cultural experiences with local Aboriginal elders.
Through urban development, Lake Gwelup is now a permanent lake that hosts extraordinary wetland ecology and biodiversity. The lake includes a viewing platform and pedestrian paths for people to explore the bushland and wetland environments.
The Lake Gwelup Story Trail will offer an interactive experience, celebrating Nyoongar culture, as well as environmental and historical stories of Lake Gwelup. It will be all about story-telling, reflecting Indigenous Heritage, European history of various migrant groups, ecology and bio diversity. The trail will help strengthen connection with place and shape how visitors experience Lake Gwelup.
To gain a deeper understanding of how the community engages with Lake Gwelup in developing the Story Trail, to support the project and bring the local community together, the City, in partnership with Karrinyup Rotary, recently hosted a free BBQ and Walkshop event at Lake Gwelup Regional Open Space.
Len Yarran, Wadjak Nyoongar Elder led a Mooro Tour, which was open to all attendees. This was an interactive experience celebrating Nyoongar culture. With refreshments provided by the City of Stirling, Karrinyup Rotary facilitated a free barbeque and provided an information point. City staff were available to discuss the Story Trail and the three key themes of the project, inviting the community to get involved and help shape the next chapter in the Lake Gwelup story.
The afternoon was a wonderful coalition of community groups with the lovely Eco Faeries providing a little magic and atmosphere of spring. View more photos of the occasion on social media pages for City of Stirling and Karrinyup Rotary.
