Foodbank WA Celebrates 25 Years

On 24th October 1994, Foodbank WA first opened its doors. Peter Polain attended the twenty fifth anniversary celebration of Foodbank in WA. Various Board Members and dignitaries reflected on the trials and tribulations over the years, as well as their successes, and recognised significant contributions from many individuals and organisations.

Foodbank has operated from three different premises, each time thinking they would never outgrow it. They are now in a huge building, in the airport precinct, from which all of their metropolitan food distribution occurs. Apart from distribution of fresh and canned food, they have nutritionists and chefs, who prepare wholesome ready to eat meals. They also support over 200 schools with a breakfast program. All attendees at the celebration were given a copy of a history book produced to commemorate the occasion.

The Rotary Club of Karrinyup has had a long association with Foodbank WA having been involved since its inception and significantly the book mentions the contribution of RC Karrinyup Past President, Barry Tibbitts, who served on the Foodbank Financial Committee for many years providing professional financial services and guidance. It also refers to Charter President Graham Fosbery. Graham was a long standing Board Member and key driver of Foodbank, particularly in its early years. The Rotary Club of Karrinyup is also mentioned for its financial contributions over several years.

25 years and 50 million kgs later, Foodbank WA is still focused on a vision of ending hunger in WA. The history book 'The Giving Pantry' was produced to help celebrate this special milestone. Peter has a hard copy of the book, should members wish to read it, but anyone may download it free of charge in pdf format from this link (it is a large download so be patient).
