Vocational Training in Andon     

Stellar Child Care Organisation (SCCO) develops sustainable education and employment opportunities in Cambodia. It supports poverty-stricken families in Andong, a displaced community near Phnom Penh. The focus is on practical projects, that provide long-term, sustainable solutions in education, family support and income generation. One such project is vocational training of young men and women. RC Karrinyup International service team is working with SCCO to support to train up to ten young men and women each year.

2022 Michael Chin Humanitarian Award     

RC Karrinyup is pleased to announce the 2022 recipient of the Dr Michael Chin Humanitarian Award is Solaris Cancer Care Op Shop Manager Marilyn Salley. Her efforts have supported thousands, whose lives have been impacted by cancer. The Award, created in 2000 in honour of RC Karrinyup charter member Michael Chin, honours outstanding individuals, who serve the community for their humanitarian and volunteer activities. It was presented by Michael's son Peter Chin.

2022 Nurse of the Year     

The RC Karrinyup Nurse of the Year Award was created in 1990 to honour outstanding nurses and midwives working at the Osborne Park Hospital (OPH). This annual Award recognises a nurse (or midwife), selected by the hospital, whose daily dedication and care epitomises the highest standard of quality and personal commitment. The winner of the 2022 RC Karrinyup Osborne Park Hospital Nurse of the Year Award is Keren Smith. Congratulations Keren!

World Immunization Week 2022     

World Immunization Week aims to highlight the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. Vaccination is one of the best tools we have to improve people’s health and well-being. This is very relevant as we endeavour to cope with the current pandemic. Global vaccination programs for preventable diseases, such as polio, are critical to protecting vulnerable children and preventing outbreaks.

Rotary Foundation Alumni of WA Reconnect 2022     

An initiative of President Peter Durrant, RC Karrinyup was delighted to host a Rotary Foundation Alumni of WA Reconnect 2022 dinner at the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club (MAAC). Guest Speaker Richard Court's excellent presentation entitled 'Our Asian World Post COVID' was very relevant and most interesting. Rotary Foundaton Alumni of WA President Bill Hassell was delighted with the event and has requested our club consider making this and annual affair.

A Visit to RC Attadale     

President Elect Jenni Wilke responded to a request from work colleague Heather McNaught (RC Attadale) for a team from Karrinyup Rotary to visit her club and share some of our RC Karrinyup's strategies and experiences, particularly in the area of attracting new members. Jenni and Membership Director Mick Rogers, together with Secretary Carolyn Prunster, attended a very pleasant evening meeting at the Swan Yacht Club.

Socks For the Homeless 2022     

Homeless people struggle to find clean dry socks, which can result in their developing trench foot and other problems. This is best prevented by wearing clean dry socks. RC Karrinyup's Sandra McGuire is calling for your help to supply warm socks to homeless people. These need to be in natural fibres for both men and women. If you cannot purchase them yourself, you may wish to donate money to buy the socks. Just $5 will buy two pairs of socks. Sandra and her team will collect both socks and money at the admin stall at the Stirling Farmers Market over the next couple of weeks. Please give her your support.

Being Senior WA Citizen of the Year     

Neville Pollard introduced Jan Standen, president of Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren WA. Jan, who is the Senior WA Citizen of the Year for 2022, described how while initially reluctant to accept nomination for the award, she agreed because it would enable her to showcase the dire need for Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren to receive government carer support. She urged everyone to step up and petition their local MP to create Fairer Futures for grandparent carers and their grandchildren. Just enter your postcode to contact your MP. The letter is already written.

ShelterBox Update 2022     

The world is witnessing a vast humanitarian crisis unfold as thousands of innocent people flee Ukraine desperately trying to find safety. The UN reports that over 660,000 people have already left the country and predicts as many as 12 million people may need humanitarian assistance. In response to an urgent call this week from Rotary International Service Project ShelterBox Australia, RC Karrinyup, a long term supporter, has more than doubled our annual contribution.

National Flood Appeal     

Rotary Australia Relief Fund - As a result of the flooding in QLD and Northern NSW, Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) has established a National Flood Appeal to raise funds for distribution to impacted families and businesses. The fund aims to get financial assistance quickly to those in need to help with the clean up and damage. Karrinyup Rotary has this week made a substantial donation through this RAWCS fund. Your additional support would be most appreciated.

OAM to Peter Polain     

Karrinyup Rotary congratulates our esteemed member and Past President Peter Polain, who has been named in the Australia Day honours with an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to the Community in a variety of roles. Peter led the Community Service Committee through numerous major projects including the Karrinyup Community Men's Shed. He took on a pivotal role in founding the Stirling Farmers Market, acted as manager for nine years and is still involved in the Management Committee.

Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation have released a position statement on COVID-19 vaccination. As the first organization to envision a polio-free world through mass immunization of children, Rotary believes that the decision to vaccinate is a humanitarian imperative.

Camp Quality in 2021     

Community Service Director Mike Murphy with the team from Camp Quality, who told us how our support for kids affected by cancer in WA is working. Camp Quality gives kids facing cancer the chance to be kids again, providing a support network and a range of non-medical support services for children living with cancer and their families. RC Karrinyup has been a supporter for many years.

Rotary Impacting Lives Danjoo Koorliny     

Karrinyup Rotary has supported RDA Carine for eighteen years and was integral in converting their need for an all weather facility into a proposal that could be submitted for approval and funding for the facility, which opened in 2019. At the recent renaming ceremony to Danjoo Koorliny, one family told how the arena has provided an incredibly important place within the community and especially in the life of their family demonstrating that Rotary truly does impact and change lives forever.

Karrinyup Rotary members were proud to attend the renaming ceremony for RDA Carine - Danjoo Koorliny. The Danjoo Koorliny Walking Together Social Impact Project is designed and led by Aboriginal leaders to help us all walk together towards the future. Karrinyup Rotary has supported RDA Carine for eighteen years and was integral in converting their need for an all weather facility into a proposal that could be submitted for approval and funding. The facility, which opened in 2019, is now beautifully decorated by local indigenous artists.

Stirling Farmers Market Celebrates Ten Years     

For ten years, the RC Karrinyup has administerd the Stirling Farmers Market. As well as being a reliable source of income for all our many charity projects, this weekly event has established our club as a visual presence in the local community. Market patrons continue to praise the wonderful friendly atmosphere, which prevails each Sunday morning at the market. Club members and helpers on duty each week are responsible for perpetuating this.

The Georgia Rotary Student Program has been going for 69 years. Each year this scholarship program sponsors about 60 students from around the world, who spend a year studying at a university in Georgia. The aim is to promote peace and international understanding.

Zambia Water Project     

The Zambia Water Project involved scoping and drilling a bore to sufficient depth and installation of a pump and water tank.  This has now provided clean drinking water for the school of some eighty orphaned and vulnerable children under the support of Arising Life Ministries in Ndola, Zambia as well as to the community of the Kaloko area.

The winner of the 2016 Rotary Club Karrinyup Osborne Park Hospital Nurse of the Year Award, created some 26 years ago, is after hours Clinical Nurse Manager, Rebecca Crellin. This Award is highly regarded by the staff and promoted extensively by the Hospital.  Congratulations Rebecca!

District Sponsored Interplast Team to Fiji     

Our club supports Interplast Australia, which sent a team to Labasa, Fiji, in March 2016. The six person Interplast volunteer team consisted of two surgeons, two anaesthetists and two nurses. The team provided specialised plastic surgery services (undertook 72 consultations and 32 Surgical procedures) and training to the local population and medical personnel.

2016 Marshals for Gwellup PS Fun Run     

For many years, Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455) members have acted as course marshalls for the Lake Gwelup Fun Run held annually on WA Day and this year was no exception. Another aspect of the club serving our local community. The weather was kind and the team enjoyed a great morning in the carnival atmosphere.
