2016 Marshals for Gwellup PS Fun Run     

For many years, Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455) members have acted as course marshalls for the Lake Gwelup Fun Run held annually on WA Day and this year was no exception. Another aspect of the club serving our local community. The weather was kind and the team enjoyed a great morning in the carnival atmosphere.

Funding for Mooro Country Tours Project     

For some time our Community Service Committee has been working with the Mooro County Tour Group to provide seating at Lake Gwelup Reserve for cultural tour groups.  Federal Member for Stirling, Michael Keenan, has announced funding to assist with this project under the Stronger Communities Programme.

Rotaract Award to Peter     

An important part of Rotary's Youth Service program is Rotaract, a Rotary-sponsored service organisation for young adults aged 18 to 30. At the inaugural Joint Changeover for WA Rotaractors, RC Karrinyup's Peter Durrant was honoured as Rotaract's 'Rotarian of the Year'.  Peter is passionate about his work with the young people and his support, mentoring and guidance have been most appreciated.

Induction of President Trish     

President Heather called President Elect Trish to the podium, inducted her as the forty-third President of the Rotary Club of Karrinyup and handed over the chain of office.  President Trish thanked the club for the honour entrusted to her and introduced the Board of Directors for 2016-2017.

Earbus Launched     

The Earbus is finally on its way! This week retiring President Heather signed off the purchase order with Ron Vandermeulen, of Osborne Motor Bodies in Bayswater, to construct the Earbus diagnostic module on the back of an ISUZU Chassis.

Past Youth Services Director Carolyn introduced the RC Karrinyup 2015 - 2016 inbound Rotary Youth Exchange student, Amanda from Brazil. Amanda told us about her year with our club, her experience at Warwick Senior High School, how the year has changed her life and some absolutely fabulous Host families.

Rotary District 9455 Best Club of 2015-2016     

It is official! At the Rotary District 9455 Changeover Dinner held recently, RC Karrinyup was named Best Club of 2015-2016. Member Tony was there to receive the citation and trophy on behalf of outgoing President Heather and was proud to hand it over at this week's meeting.

Amanda Returns to Brazil     

Monday night saw the departure of Amanda, the RC Karrinyup's Rotary Youth Exchange Inbound for 2015-2016. It was lovely to see the large group at Perth International airport to farewell Amanda and wave her off back to her family.

Helping Homeless Youth     

This Rotary year RC Karrinyup has once again agreed to support Passages Resource Centre, a referral service for homeless or street present young people conducted joinly by RC Perth and the St Vincent de Paul Society in WA. This very worthwhile project comes under the Community service program.

RC Karrinyup Youth Director and former Georgia Rotary Student Program participant, Robyn introduced guest speaker Lauren Darge. RC Karrinyup endorsed Lauren as our representative to GRSP during the 2015 - 2016 academic year. Lauren described the wonderful experience of her year attending Georgia Gwinnett College in the USA.

International Director Peter has received an email update from Joyce Chimbila, our contact at Arising Life Ministries in Ndola, where we recently completed our Zambia Water Project. The story is typical of doing work in Africa and Peter intends to discuss options and a way ahead with the International Committee. Support for Rotaract Training Day     

RC Karrinyup has a long history in many aspects of Youth Service including our Past President Peter currently serving as the Rotary District 9455 Rotarian contact to Rotaract. Recently, member Jeanne was able to apply her vocational skills to provide a personal development training presentation on Mindfulness as the first of two sessions to support young Rotaracters in WA at their recent training day.

Fifth Birthday for Stirling Farmers Market     

What a fabulous Fifth Birthday we had at the Stirling Farmers Market! The Market was bustling and there were so many happy little faces and a great crowd. We hope all our wonderful stallholders and customers enjoyed it as much as we did. Earbus Project Completed     

The Earbus has been completed and informally handed over to the Earbus Foundation. The vehicle will now go through operational trials to ensure the design is fit for purpose and any issues found during the field trials will be adjusted.  Finally, the vehicle will be transformed with an appropriate Aboriginal livery for its work in the field before the formal handover takes place in the New Year.  On behalf of the thousands of Aboriginal children, who will benefit from this asset, thank you to all our generous donors. The RC Karrinyup is honoured to have been part of this journey with you.

A Vision Realized     

Over three years ago, Professor Harvey Coates AO, Clinical Patron, Earbus Foundation of WA, envisaged a mobile 'go anywhere' clinic capable of travelling to remote areas of the northwest of Western Australia. For patients unable to travel to a town clinic, it was necessary to take the clinic to them in the battle against the exceedingly high incidence of ear disease among the population of that area. Professor Coates is thrilled that, thanks to the efforts of the RC Karrinyup, this vision has now become a reality.

For a number of years, the McCusker Alzheimer's Research Foundation has been a major beneficiary of Karrinyup Rotary Club Community Service.  Ellaine Hislop, representing the renamed Australian Alzheimer's Research Foundation, recently attended a meeting to receive a donation from the club and give an update on recent developments in research.

Call for Nominations Michael Chin Humanitarian Award for 2016     

Nominations are called for the Michael Chin Humanitarian Award for 2016. The Award was created in 2000 to acknowledge an outstanding individual for ongoing humanitarian activities in the community. If a worthy recipient is found the award is presented the following May. Do you know anyone who should be nominated for this award? Nominations close 10th March.

Visit to Mooro Country Tours Project     

Last year our Community Service Committee worked with the Mooro County Tour Group to provide seating at Lake Gwelup Reserve for cultural tour groups. The project was completed last October. President Trish, together with a group of members and partners recently visited the site to inspect the completed project and found it to be most satisfactory.

New Beach Shelter for Trigg Surf Club     

RC Karrinyup has once again supported the Trigg Island Surf Lifesaving Club in the dedicated and amazing work they do in the local community down at Trigg Beach. Our club has enjoyed a long-standing and close relationship with the surf club and has recently funded the purchase of a large beach shelter., thus building on previous donations for rescue vehicles and equipment, such as an Oxy Viva unit, over the years and furthering the relationship between the two clubs.

Specsavers Support RC Karrinyup     

Specsavers stores across Australia are committed to supporting the communities that support them. Each store is locally owned and operated by community-based optometrists, who elect a local charity, along with The Fred Hollows Foundation, to support through the Specsavers Community Program, with funds donated out of their own pockets for every pair of glasses sold. SpecSavers Karrinyup has elected to nominate the RC Karrinyup as their ‘Charity of Choice’

Earbus Handover & Launch     

Members of RC Karrinyup turned out in force for the handover and launch of WA’s first community-funded mobile ear clinic at the Stirling Farmers’ Market. The completed Earbus is the realization of a dream for Professor Harvey Coates AO, Clinical Patron, Earbus Foundation of WA, who three years ago envisaged a mobile 'go anywhere' clinic, capable of travelling to remote areas of the northwest of Western Australia. Thanks to the passionate 'fund, design and build' campaign of the RC Karrinyup, this dream has now become a reality.

Thank You For Mooro Country Project     

Recently the Wadjak Northside Community Group hosted a tour of Lake Gwelup Mooro Country for members of our club, as a thank you for the seating facility. The tour started with an introduction at the Lake Gwelup seating facility showing us the Lake Gwelup Reserve from a traditional Aboriginal perspective. On a perfect autumn day, members shared a truly delightful morning with the lovely Wadjak, people concluding with a delicious morning tea featuring produce from the Australian bush.

Support for Wheelchairs for Kids 2017     

Wheelchairs for Kids is a project of the Rotary Club of Scarborough, which produces up to 350 wheelchairs a month for disabled children all over the world. These are produced to WHO standards at the workshop in Wangara. At our meeting this week, International Committee member Udo presented Wheelchairs for Kids CEO Gordon with Rotary Club of Karrinyup's annual donation. Gordon gave us a short update on the recent milestones of the project.
