Karrinyup Community Men's Shed Takes Off     

Approximately 50 people attended a widely advertised meeting at the Karrinyup Community Centre recently with a view to establishing a Community Men’s Shed in Karrinyup. The project is a ‘Go’ and a steering committee has been established.

Zambia Water Project     

The Zambia Water Project involved scoping and drilling a bore to sufficient depth and installation of a pump and water tank.  This has now provided clean drinking water for the school of some eighty orphaned and vulnerable children under the support of Arising Life Ministries in Ndola, Zambia as well as to the community of the Kaloko area.

Shelter Box Always on Ground     

We are all aware of the havoc wreaked by Cyclone Winston in Fiji over the weekend, Thousands of homes have been destroyed and the Fijian Government has declared a state of emergency. As always, a ShelterBox Response Team is on the ground and the first ShelterBox aid is being distributed. RC Karrinyup has long been a generous supporter of Shelterbox. Adopt a Park Program     

RC Karrinyup past president Colin was seen this week at a thank you event to acknowledge dedicated City of Stirling Adopt-A-Park supporters. Mayor Italiano was on hand to thank the community-minded volunteers, who keep an eye on the local parks and reserves.

For a number of years, the McCusker Alzheimer's Research Foundation has been major beneficiary of Karrinyup Rotary Club Community Service.  CEO, Dr Judy Edwards, recently attended a meeting to receive a donation from the club and give an update on recent development in research.

The winner of the 2016 Rotary Club Karrinyup Osborne Park Hospital Nurse of the Year Award, created some 26 years ago, is after hours Clinical Nurse Manager, Rebecca Crellin. This Award is highly regarded by the staff and promoted extensively by the Hospital.  Congratulations Rebecca!

2015 – 2016 recipient of the Dr Michael Chin Humanitarian Award, Marianne McCabe, was honoured to receive the Award at the recent RC Karrinyup birthday dinner. The Award honours outstanding individuals in the local community for their humanitarian services.

Helping the Salvos 2016     

For many years our Rotary Club has assisted the Salvation Army with the Annual Red Shield Appeal.  Rotary Club of Karrinyup volunteers Rose, Dwynnyth and Ross were seen volunteering at the local shopping centre.

District Sponsored Interplast Team to Fiji     

Our club supports Interplast Australia, which sent a team to Labasa, Fiji, in March 2016. The six person Interplast volunteer team consisted of two surgeons, two anaesthetists and two nurses. The team provided specialised plastic surgery services (undertook 72 consultations and 32 Surgical procedures) and training to the local population and medical personnel.

2016 Marshals for Gwellup PS Fun Run     

For many years, Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455) members have acted as course marshalls for the Lake Gwelup Fun Run held annually on WA Day and this year was no exception. Another aspect of the club serving our local community. The weather was kind and the team enjoyed a great morning in the carnival atmosphere.

Funding for Mooro Country Tours Project     

For some time our Community Service Committee has been working with the Mooro County Tour Group to provide seating at Lake Gwelup Reserve for cultural tour groups.  Federal Member for Stirling, Michael Keenan, has announced funding to assist with this project under the Stronger Communities Programme.

Rotaract Award to Peter     

An important part of Rotary's Youth Service program is Rotaract, a Rotary-sponsored service organisation for young adults aged 18 to 30. At the inaugural Joint Changeover for WA Rotaractors, RC Karrinyup's Peter Durrant was honoured as Rotaract's 'Rotarian of the Year'.  Peter is passionate about his work with the young people and his support, mentoring and guidance have been most appreciated.

Induction of President Trish     

President Heather called President Elect Trish to the podium, inducted her as the forty-third President of the Rotary Club of Karrinyup and handed over the chain of office.  President Trish thanked the club for the honour entrusted to her and introduced the Board of Directors for 2016-2017.

Earbus Launched     

The Earbus is finally on its way! This week retiring President Heather signed off the purchase order with Ron Vandermeulen, of Osborne Motor Bodies in Bayswater, to construct the Earbus diagnostic module on the back of an ISUZU Chassis.

Past Youth Services Director Carolyn introduced the RC Karrinyup 2015 - 2016 inbound Rotary Youth Exchange student, Amanda from Brazil. Amanda told us about her year with our club, her experience at Warwick Senior High School, how the year has changed her life and some absolutely fabulous Host families.

Rotary District 9455 Best Club of 2015-2016     

It is official! At the Rotary District 9455 Changeover Dinner held recently, RC Karrinyup was named Best Club of 2015-2016. Member Tony was there to receive the citation and trophy on behalf of outgoing President Heather and was proud to hand it over at this week's meeting.

Amanda Returns to Brazil     

Monday night saw the departure of Amanda, the RC Karrinyup's Rotary Youth Exchange Inbound for 2015-2016. It was lovely to see the large group at Perth International airport to farewell Amanda and wave her off back to her family.

Helping Homeless Youth     

This Rotary year RC Karrinyup has once again agreed to support Passages Resource Centre, a referral service for homeless or street present young people conducted joinly by RC Perth and the St Vincent de Paul Society in WA. This very worthwhile project comes under the Community service program.

Lauren, returned from a GRSP academic year, recently met up with other alumni Mark, Emily and Robyn, as well as Eleanor, who leaves for Georgia in a couple of days. RC Karrinyup Youth Director and former Georgia Rotary Student Program participant, Robyn introduced guest speaker Lauren Darge. RC Karrinyup endorsed Lauren as our representative to GRSP during the 2015 - 2016 academic year. Lauren described the wonderful experience of her year attending Georgia Gwinnett College in the USA.

Earbus Takes Shape     

RC Karrinyup representatives visited Osborne Motor Bodies in Bayswater recently and found the progress of the Earbus is well advanced. The shell is on the chassis and the steps have been fitted. Paul Higginbotham and Lara Shur of Earbus Foundation of WA, were very impressed.  The staff were keen to show what they had built and describe the next steps, which include the interior fit out.
