First RC Karrinyup Sponsored ASIST Workshop
In line with Rotary Australia's desire to improve the mental health of our nation and as part of our service to our local community, Rotary Club of Karrinyup (District 9455) recently partnered with the City of Stirling and the WA Mental Health Commission to provide a fabulous course designed to make our community more 'Suicide Safe'. This partnership provided valuable training over a two day workshop for a nominal cost, in intervention techniques to enable participants to deal with suicidal friends, family members or acquaintances.
The ASIST workshop is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first-aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognise when someone is at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety.
The first RC Karrinyup sponsored workshop, which ran over two days at the end of September, was coordinated by Lorna Hirsch, Senior Coaching and Consultant Trainer at LivingWorks Education Inc. and Manager for National Centre for Suicide Prevention Training (WA) Inc, was a huge success. Participants spoke very highly of the training they received and were most grateful to the Rotary Club of Karrinyup for providing this valuable opportunity. It is to be hoped this can be an ongoing service to the community.
