Karrinyup Community Mens Shed at the SFM

Men's Sheds across the country provide an opportunity for members to develop skills, which enhance their self-esteem, and in turn provide a positive impact upon their lives, their families and the community.

The Karrinyup Community Men’s Shed commenced operations on 1st June 2018 and currently has 49 members. The shed is currently open from 8.30 to 12.30 from Tuesday to Friday.

The shed recently hosted its first Men’s Health presentation by Physiotherapist Jo Milios. The event was well attended and most informative.

There has been considerable expenditure on upgrading the building to accommodate our activities as well as purchasing a range of tools and machinery which enable members to undertake a wide variety of projects.

The sheds facilities now include:

  • Several new machines and tools primarily for woodworking activities.
  • Vegetable garden
  • Computers
  • Book exchange
  • Hobby and Model making area

We have been successful in obtaining grants from the Federal Government’s Veterans Affairs ($10.000) and “Stronger Communities” ($7000) grant programs. We have also received a grant of $5000 from The Australian Men’s Shed Association for the purchase of hand tools.

The shed project was instigated by the Rotary Club of Karrinyup (RCK) and two of our members are on the Management Committee which looks after the planning and operations of the shed. RCK has also been the largest contributor of funds for the shed having donated $20.000 so far and envisage a similar amount to be needed over the next 12 months as more equipment will be needed and we are planning further improvements to the building and facilities.

The shed is already regarded as successful in that it provides the facilities and environment for men to get together, enjoy each- others company, undertake hobbies and projects and improve their physical and mental well-being.

It was originally intended that we would have no age restrictions as men of all ages can benefit from using our facilities and so far, the age of our members range from mid 30’s to mid 80’s. New members are always welcome.
