An Academic Year in Georgia

The Georgia Rotary Student Program is a wonderful opportunity offered to young academics by the Rotary Clubs of Rotary District 6900Rotary District 6910 and Rotary District 6920 ‚Äč in Georgia, USA.

Since 1946, Rotarians in Georgia have promoted world peace through understanding by offering scholarships to international students for one year of study in Georgia colleges and universities. Georgia Rotary Clubs sponsor students recommended by a Rotary Club in their home country. The students become adopted members of a Georgia “host family,” living on-campus at the school they attend.

RC Karrinyup endorsed Lauren Darge as our representative to GRSP during the 2015 - 2016 academic year. Lauren studied at Georgia Gwinnett College, which is only ten years old. She stayed in a unit on campus with five other students, but also had a host family who looked after her during holiday periods. Many educational institutions in Georgia are involved in the programme.  46 students from 16 countries were involved with the programme during the academic year.

Lauren was supported by three Rotary Clubs including Rotary Club of Braselton and the Rotary Club of Duluth, where she was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for the fine qualities and service she displayed during her year with them.

Despite the need to study there was plenty of time to socialise, including activities organised by the College. She also had a visit from her family during the year and together they travelled to different parts of the US. See Lauren’s blog for more details.

Our Rotary club was fortunate to have with us for the evening several Rotary District 9455 participants in the program - Mark (2014/15), Eleanor (heading off for 2016/17), Lauren (2015/16), Emily (2012/13) and Robyn (1988/89). Emily returned to complete her studies at UWA, Eleanor is currently studying at UWA and will go to Wesleyan College in Maçon, where she will be studying politics. Mark will depart shortly for a University Scholars Leadership Symposium in Hanoi, Vietnam, while Robyn is currently Youth Service Director at our club.

Do you know someone who might be interested in this great program? Further information on the program can be found on the GRSP website.
