Support for Interplast 2019
Interplast was started in 1983 as a joint project of Rotary with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. It is strongly supported by Rotary Clubs throughout Australia and New Zealand. Its motto is “Repairing bodies, rebuilding lives” by plastic and reconstructive surgery programs and training.
Interplast exists to enhance people’s health and wellbeing by enabling access to life-changing reconstructive surgery and related medical services. Over the years it has operated in 24 countries in the Asia Pacific region, including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Tonga and Mongolia.
With the participation of 90 medics and 600 volunteers, Interplast has provided 40,000 patient consultations and 23,000 live changing operations. The most common surgical operations are for cleft lips and palates, skin grafts for burns, tumours and trauma reconstruction.
In many cases, children with deformities and bullied and in some cases families are ostracised. These operations provide a new lease of life, not only for the patient but also for their families.
The Rotary Club of Karrinyup has provided ongoing support for many years and continues to do so.
