First Birthday for Karrinyup Community Mens Shed

The RC Karrinyup's major Community Service project, the Karrinyup Community Men's Shed, has now been flourishing at 6 Jedda Road, Balcatta for a year and on Friday, 21st June, the guys celebrated its first birthday with an ‘Open Day’ at the Shed welcoming interested visitors and potential new members.

Vice President, Jeff Crookes, did a great job in spreading the message to retirement villages, RSL clubs and Probus clubs as well as getting lots of publicity.

Invited guests, Balcatta MLA David Michael, City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin, Councillors Adam Spagnolo and Giovanni Italiano, as well as Stirling CEO Stuart Jardine came along to see the Shed’s progress and meet with Members.

As well as a celebration, we were also looking to attract new Members and were amazed at the level of interest. Members were kept busy all morning meeting all of the guests and showing off their shed. About 30 Membership application forms were handed out and five applications were received within 24 hours.

The Shed offers a variety of modern machines and tools to suit those with interests in woodworking, wood-turning, model-making, arts/crafts and gardening. Many other interests can be accommodated as the imagination of members dictates. There are no pre-requisite skills requirements.

Membership of a shed is about feeling good about yourself, being productive and contributing to your community, achieving personal enrichment, connecting with new friends and maintaining an active body and mind.

Men’s Sheds provide a safe and busy environment where men from all walks of life can discover new experiences in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. Most importantly, there is no managerial hierarchy, no production targets and no pressure. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa, if that is all they want.
