Karrinyup Community Mens Shed Celebrates Two Years

The Karrinyup Community Men's Shed, has now completed its second successful full year of operation.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there could be no birthday celebration this year.

However, a celebration is planned for the opening of the new Crib Room, when it is completed.

In its short history, the Shed has grown and advanced in many ways. Some developments and achievements include:

  • The Shed now has 80 Members, which is the current capacity.
  • The woodworking workshop is fully equipped with appropriate tools and machinery.
  • A ducted dust extraction system has been installed.
  • The gardening group has done a great job of new plantings, maintenance of existing gardens and establishment of vegetable gardens and a mini orchard.
  • The Shed has established a computer room and operates instruction classes to help members make better use of computers and mobile phones.
  • The Shed has acquired a sea container, which is used for additional storage of timber.
  • The Shed will soon have a new crib room to be used for morning teas and small presentations. This will be jointly funded by the City of Stirling and a Federal Government grant.
  • The City of Stirling is to carry out an electrical upgrade to meet the increased demands on the power circuit.
  • A separate hobbies room has been established.

Other additions to the culture of the Shed have included the presentation of a number of Men’s Health topic discussions with guest speakers.

Funded by a Connect Groups Grant, the shed engaged professional assistance to investigate the diverse needs of members, particularly those with special dependencies.

While the Shed had to be closed to comply with government regulations during the recent COVID- 19 pandemic, it is now functioning again while taking the required precautions.

Financially, the Shed has become self- sufficient on an operational basis but it still may require some additional support for capital expenditure.

Membership of a shed is about feeling good about yourself, being productive and contributing to your community, achieving personal enrichment, connecting with new friends and maintaining an active body and mind.

Men’s Sheds provide a safe and busy environment where men from all walks of life can discover new experiences in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. Most importantly, there is no managerial hierarchy, no production targets and no pressure. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa, if that is all they want.
