Be Hands On to EndTrachoma

Trachoma is an infectious disease caused by bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and little or no personal hygiene. Australia is one of the countries on the list as being at risk of this disease especially in the poorer areas. It is most prevalent in younger school aged children and at the moment is prevalent in the Goldfields area.

Rotary has taken up the cause of educating young children and families and in most other states they have been successful in reaching children and families through the education system. Karrinyup Rotary has taken up the baton to help educate the children of the Goldfields, where this disease at present is very prevalent.

Our task at this point in time is to supply 300 toilet bags, which contain the following items:

  • Bath towel and face washer
  • Toothbrush and toothbrush holder (children's)
  • Dove soap (low PH balance) and soap dish
  • Turning Point 2 in 1 shampoo
  • Tissues
  • Family size toothpaste

When filled, these toilet bags will be taken to Kalgoorlie, where Curtin University will distribute them throughout the Goldfields area to school children, who will then be educated in the areas of hygiene especially in the care of their eyes.

If anyone would like to contribute any of the items listed above, please bring them to the club meeting or alternatively bring them to the Stirling Farmers Market on any Sunday.

We are also looking for any material that you may have lying around, as our members are making the toilet bags, which are being used for the above. Any old children's quilt covers for which you have no further use would be excellent. These can be cut up and reused for the bags with children's designs being very sought after.

Help us to be hands on! Please contact Sandra McGuire if you can help in any way.
