NYSF Update 2024

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) runs in January each year for students about to enter year 12. Since 1984, more than 14,000 young Australians have progressed through the NYSF Year 12 Program, including those run under the organisation’s previous banner, the National Science Summer School (NSSS). Rotary is the Founding Partner of NYSF and today the 18 local Rotary districts across Australia continue to conduct selections for the NYSF Year 12 Program on behalf of the NYSF.

Of the 503 students, who participated over two sessions in Canberra and Brisbane from 5-20 January 2024; 68% were young women or gender diverse and 45% were from remote and regional areas. There were 8 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants and they offered 92 NYSF Access and Equity Scholarships to students in need (Including travel allowances to our two students).

They delivered over 160 diverse STEM visits, 11 specialist lectures, 4 Careers sessions (plus 2 in person careers expos and speed networking sessions!), 2 international live-crosses and 2 immersive STEM communication workshops.

Covid was a problem however on the course, which meant the workload for those who weren’t suffering was increased significantly.

Karrinyup Rotary sponsored two students to attend in January 2024, who presented to the club this week. Applications for January 2025 are expected to open in April.
