Clubs Collaborate in Healthcare Project
Black Swan Health has been delivering the Street Doctor service for 20 years. Starting in Fremantle, it provides a number of clinics in Perth's southern suburbs. Black Swan Health delivers a fully accredited General Practice medical service and attends to a broad range of health issues. Many attendees are homeless but some are on low incomes. Clients would normally attend an emergency department if the service was not available. The Street Doctor service is therefore more efficient and user friendly. GP services are bulk billed and receive Medicare funding.
Black Swan Health identified the need for a Street Doctor service in Perth's North metropolitan area. In 2023, they approached various local governments in the region with the intent to plan the commencement of Street Doctor clinics in areas of need, to identify accessible locations and seek local government funding contribution. The City of Stirling approached Rotary Clubs in the area to support this undertaking.
The Rotary Clubs of Karrinyup, Osborne Park and Scarborough accepted this opportunity and collaborated to provide the funding necessary for this very essential service project to commence. The medical team was recruited and the service launched in Mirrabooka on 13 March, 2024.
'People of Action', Rotary is proud to contribute to the health and well-being of the homeless community, a key target group for our activities offering 'Service above Self' to 'Create Hope in the World'.
