President Phil's Address Storytrail Opening
'KAYA -Fellow Rotarians, esteemed guests and valued members of our community. We gather here today to celebrate a significant moment for the Rotary Club of Karrinyup – the launch of our Golden Project, the Lake Gwelup Trail Head and the Story Trail. This project was conceived during the Rotary Year of 2020 – 2021 and marks a significant milestone for our club’s 50th Anniversary – this year.
The Lake Gwelup Story Trail reflects our commitment to community engagement which is deeply ingrained in our Rotary Club. For decades we have strived to make tangible contributions to our community with great success. We can proudly point to the Scout Hall, within this very precinct, as one contribution and the Stirling City Farmers’ market is another example.
This new project builds on that legacy.
The Trail invites visitors to a journey through time, helped by a thoughtfully designed Trailhead Structure that enhances signage and serves as an information point.
The Lake Gwelup Story Trail involves three essential narratives:
- Aboriginal History: we will honour the indigenous heritage of this land working in collaboration with local Aboriginal groups to ensure accurate representation.
- European Settlement History: we will acknowledge the impact of the European settlers on the landscape and community development.
- Ecological Significance: we will highlight the diverse flora and fauna that thrives within Lake Gwelup Reserve, highlighting the importance of conservation.
The Lake Gwelup Trail Head and Story Trail is more than a pathway. It represents a journey of understanding and shared responsibility providing unique learning experiences.
Through this project we aim to:
- Strengthen Community Bonds : improving connections with residents to connect with their local environment and each other.
- Promote Reconciliation: by acknowledging and celebrating Aboriginal culture and history.
- Enhance Educational Opportunities: the Trail will serve as an outdoor classroom for people of all ages.
- Boost Community Engagement: by involving residents in the project’s development.
The Rotary Club of Karrinyup is deeply grateful for the partnership and support of the City of Stirling for bringing this vision to life. Their commitment to reconciliation in their Reconciliation Action Plan aligns with our goals for the Lake Gwelup Story Trail.
As we prepare for this Grand Opening of the Lake Gwelup Trail Head and Story Trail we invite all of you join us on this incredible journey. Let us walk together, learn together and build a stronger more inclusive community for generations to come.
