Stan Perron Award to Warwick SHS Student
Stan Perron was a Western Australian businessman and philanthropist. He grew up in poor circumstance in Kalgoorlie during the Great Depression. Forced to leave school at the age of fourteen, he did not have the opportunity to attend high school but vowed to better himself. That he did and went on to become one of WA's most successful businessmen.
Throughout his life Stan always displayed an enduring commitment to ethical behaviour and personal values of integrity, respect, excellence, team work and compassion. Stan's word was his bond. These strong ethics and values were borne out by his life-long commitment to Rotary and he lived by the Rotary Four Way Test in all his undertakings:
- Is it the truth?
- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
- Will it be beneficial to all those concerned?
Upon Stan's death in 2018, Past District Governor Fred Marsh (RC Scarborough) presented the family with the idea of a scholarship and the Stan Perron Award was established in his memory. The award, which is funded by the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, seeks students who excel both academically and at sport, make a contribution to the school community service and who emulate the elements of Rotary’s Four Way Test in their relationship with their teachers and fellow students. It seeks out a student, who will be of the same calibre as Stan Perron.
PDG Fred made the belated presentation to Abdiwahab Hillow a graduate of our link school Warwick SHS and winner of an inaugural Stan Perron Award. In 2019 Abdiwahab was nominated by his school as a student, who met all the criteria. The award provides a medal and a scholarship of $500 towards further education. Congratulations Abdiwahab!
