RYLEAP 2022

Abdiwahab Hillow needed no introduction, as he had previously attended our meetings on several occasions. In his final year at Warwick Senior High School, Abdiwahad was nominated by the school and won the 2019 Stan Perron Award. More recently he visited in March 2021, as a graduate of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Building on this experience, he became the first participant RC Karrinyup has sponsored to attend the Rotary Leader Extension Advanced Program (RYLEAP).

RYLEAP is an intensive program for young people, who are serious about learning cutting edge leadership skills. The four day progam, held at the Woodman Point Recreation Camp had around fifteen participants, which enabled a much deeper level of the information being taught. Abdiwahab felt it was a very arduous journey, describing it as double the work of RYLA and one which will really help him in his work at the Edmund Rice Centre.

In particular he learned about long and short term planning and also found the finance and public speaking sessions most beneficial. Participants completing the RYLEAP program receive a Certificate 1 in Leadership. RYLEAP will help take participants leadership to the next level and will be a powerful tool in building their careers.

Abdiwahab expressed his sincere gratitude to the Rotary Club of Karrinyup for sponsoring him and enabling him to attend the camp.
